Burst - In Coveting Ways (CD)
Chrome Saint Magnus 4260023070060

Genre: Heavy Metal
Recorded: 2002
Released: 2002

Tracks: 1.Scavenger 2.Black But Shining 3.Paradise Regained 4. Ars Diavoli (The Devil In Me) In Coveting Ways is an EP that Burst released between the releases of their second studio album Conquest: Writhe from 2000 and their third studio album Prey on Life from 2003. On Conquest Writhe Burst showed lots of progress from their melodic post hardcore style but on In Coveting Ways they have perfected their style and the four songs on this EP could easily have been a part of the fantastic and experimental Prey on Life. The music is melodic post hardcore but even though the foundation of Burst music is hardcore there are lots of experiments taking place in the four songs on In Coveting Ways. The two longest tracks Scavenger and Paradise Regained have lots of different sections while the two shorter and even more energetic songs Black But Shining and Ars Diavoli are more direct but still sophisticated. For instance listen to the fast riff in Black But Shining that is doubled by an acoustic guitar. That sounds great IMO. The vocals are growling hardcore screaming and Linus Jägerskog is absolutely one of my favorite frontmen. He sounds so angry and melancholic at the same time. I was a bit overwhelmed by the brutality in his vocal approach when I started listening to Burst but I´ve grown to love his agressive vocals. The musicianship is excellent. On this EP Burst show what they are capable of and it´s quite a bit. Fast riffing and drums, intricate and clever arrangements and great dynamic playing. The production is really excellent. A bit darker than the sound on Prey on Life but really enjoyable. In Coveting Ways is a very worthy purchase for people into challenging melodic post hardcore with an extreme vocal approach. The music can be compared to bands like The Ocean, Memfis and Breach but Burst has their own unique style. In Coveting Ways is easily a 4 star rating for me.(www.progarchives.com).
