Swinging to a melody. Biscaya was a Swedish band that emerged in the early 80's in response to the emergence of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) scene. Unlike their countrymen in Overdrive, Biscaya's sound was closer to Demon and Tygers of Pan Tang's more melodic style than Saxon and Iron Maiden's all-out metal approach. They also incorporated some Kansas and Queen-like progressive elements. It's an interesting mix, and it works pretty well. The band's self-titled 1983 debut album (their only release) is heavy, melodic (pretty much a given for a Swedish band), and somewhat progressive, and sits somewhere between metal and melodic hard rock. The musicianship is solid, the songs are well written, and the vocals are smooth and emotive. Biscaya won't appeal to everyone, but die-hard fans of 80's rock and metal, particularly those into melodic hard rock bands that straddle the line between rock and metal (think: Demon, Rail, Axe, etc.), should find this album to be a welcome addition to their collections.
